Mini-Split Reviews | Pros and Cons Simplified!

Share:

Ductless mini-split systems are the energy-efficient leader in the cooling industry. They are built to heat and cool your home while saving you money on your energy bills by having one indoor and outdoor unit that works without using ducts.

But are they all they’re cracked up to be? Let’s look at some reviews about the most popular mini-splits on the market, and you can decide!

Quick Take: Best and Worst Mini-Splits

Best Ductless Mini-Split Brands:

  • Mitsubishi Electric
  • LG
  • Daikin

Ductless Mini-Split Brands to Avoid:

  • MRCOOL
  • Carrier
  • Klimaire

Do Mini-Split Systems Use a Lot of Electricity?

Many people are hesitant to install a mini-split system in their homes because they worry it will use a lot of electricity. However, mini-split systems are very efficient and can help you save money on your energy bills.

Mini-split systems use about 30% less electricity than traditional central air conditioning systems. This is because mini splits are ductless systems that only condition the space that you are using with one indoor unit rather than cooling or heating your entire home. You can save money on your energy bills while enjoying the comfort of a well-conditioned home.

What Are the Disadvantages of a Mini-Split System?

Mini-split AC systems have several advantages, but there are also some disadvantages to consider.

  • One downside is that a mini-split air conditioner can be more expensive than other air conditioners since they require both indoor and outdoor units.
  • A mini-split AC system can be challenging to install, and most homeowners will need to hire a professional contractor to handle the installation process. You want to ensure your indoor units are correctly placed to make the most out of your ductless air conditioner.
  • Ductless mini-split air conditioning systems are not as effective at cooling large spaces as conventional air conditioners, so they may not be the best choice for homes with large rooms.

Which Ductless Mini-Split System Brand is Best?

Mitsubishi Electric: Known for Durability

Mitsubishi electric mini-splits are the most popular option for a reason. They have a larger pool of service technicians to choose from, better availability of more models, a higher likelihood you’ll be able to design a system to fit your needs exactly, and potentially faster service for troubleshooting or repairs. They also have a reputation for durability. You can’t go wrong with a Mitsubishi electric mini-split.

“I can count on one hand how many replacement parts I’ve had to put on a Mitsubishi mini-split system,” one customer said. “There are other brands where I can’t say that.”

LG: A Trusted Brand in Energy Efficiency

As one of the world’s largest electronics companies, LG has a lot to offer regarding HVAC systems. Like Mitsubishi Electric, LG offers a wide range of products that are designed to provide optimum comfort in any setting.

LG’s Mini-Split systems are among the most popular in the market, and for a good reason. These units offer several advantages over traditional HVAC systems, including superior energy efficiency and easier installation.

LG’s Mini-Split systems come with a variety of features that make them even more appealing, such as optional wireless controls and a variety of aesthetic options. It’s no surprise that LG is one of the leading suppliers of mini-split systems.

“I had this LG unit installed and I could not be more pleased. I set it at 73F and leave it. Yes, it is that reliable to keep the garage area constant in temp and low humidity. I have recommended this to friends.”

Daikin: Convenience and Flexibility in Operation

Daikin is another worldwide company that offers a large selection of units. According to their website, they have a wide-ranging of local installers and, like Mitsubishi and LG, a 12-year warranty and rebates for many of their products, including their
ductless mini-splits.

The controls allow the customer to operate their unit from anywhere at any time. One disadvantage is they offer few choices on the aesthetic of the wall-mounted units. The combination options of the system’s equipment still offer enough flexibility performance-wise to meet most homes’ needs.

“We purchased this air conditioner to cool an approximately 400-square-foot area in our kitchen and family room. Since then I have been more than very happy with the product. It cools the area down quickly so we do not have to use the main household air conditioner at all, or very infrequently. Also, in cold winter months, the heat pump is totally adequate.”

Mini-Split Brands to Avoid

In the world of HVAC, there are a lot of different brands to choose from. Some are well-known and have a good reputation, while others are lesser known and may not have the same quality.

1. MRCOOL: DIY Mini-Splits

mini-split
MRCOOL specializes in
DIY mini-splits that customers can install themselves. As you can probably imagine, DIYing something as important as your heating and cooling system comes with a number of risks, especially if the homeowner isn’t skilled in this type of work.

Besides the risks of the system not being installed properly, there are also risks of building code violations. Their website includes the following disclaimer:

“MRCOOL® products must be installed in accordance with all applicable local, state, and federal codes and regulations. Unless explicitly stated otherwise, installation must be completed by a licensed/certified HVAC technician.  ALL electrical connections to a power source must be performed by a licensed electrician and comply with local, state, and federal electrical codes and regulations.”

Additionally, their air conditioning systems have been reported to freeze and leak with time.

The number one complaint seen is their customer service and delayed communication with their customers. A recent customer stated, “I called months ago to file a claim after my HVAC service tech had to fill the unit three times. It took months to have an initial call back just for them to tell me I needed to have a Freon sniff test done. The next week I had my tech out to perform the test, and that was over 3 weeks ago. I have called Mr. Cool 10 times since then with no return call.”

As a result, many HVAC companies avoid this brand and instead recommend other brands that are more reliable and have better quality control.

Carrier: High Maintenance and Replacement Costs

Carrier is a world-renowned name when it comes to air conditioners. So, many people were eager to try them out when
Carrier mini-splits hit the market due to their lower price tag. However, these ACs have a shorter lifespan than other models on the market, and their warranty coverage is not as comprehensive. This has increased maintenance and replacement costs for many Carrier mini-split owners.

It’s been reported that the coils on these ACs began leaking after just 2-3 years and that other maintenance issues have arisen that are not covered by the company’s warranty. As a result, many people have spent hundreds of dollars each year on maintenance for their Carrier mini-splits, with no permanent fix in sight. This has led to a great deal of frustration among Carrier mini-split owners and tarnished this once-respected brand’s reputation.

“This product has cost us more than $9000 in repairs. The company claimed that it is a closed unit that should not need maintenance and yet we have had to replace a leaky interior coil, and coolant, and pay $600 for a leak test. This is the 3rd issue with the unit and apparently, nothing is under warranty.”

Klimaire: Shot Lifespan and Little Warranty Coverage

Many customers who have purchased
Klimaire products have faced a wide range of problems after only a few years of use. These problems, which include faulty circuit boards and loud noises coming from the mini splits, are not covered by the company’s warranty.

Customers are left on their own to repair or replace repairs on their devices. Klimaire’s after-sales service also lacks, with many customers reporting that they receive little to no help from customer service representatives. Given the frequency and severity of these issues, it is no wonder that so many users have shown dissatisfaction with the Klimaire brand.

“I purchased an 18000 BTU unit 2 zones and a 24000 BTU unit. 1st unit lasted 8 months before any problems. The service department gave us lots of problems with the warranty, so I tried to purchase the part separately. After several months back and forth they finally sent the parts. I have had trouble every year with my unit. After 8 years, I am fed up.”

Are Mini-Split Systems Worth It?

When it comes to climate control in your home, there are a lot of options to choose from. Many homeowners find that mini split systems are the best way to maintain a comfortable environment. They are very efficient, and they can be installed in a variety of different ways to suit your needs.

Mini-split systems are designed to be quiet, making them ideal for bedrooms and other areas where you want to avoid noise pollution. They may have a high initial cost, but they will save you money and headaches in the future.
